How to Choose Your First Sewing Project (and actually finish it!)

So, you’ve decided to finally learn how to sew; yay! Whether you were inspired by TikTok trends, DIY fashion on Instagram, or just the thrill of making something with your hands, starting your first sewing project is exciting... and a little intimidating.

At Fashion Makerspace, we’ve taught hundreds of beginners how to sew. From threading their first bobbin to creating their wearable pieces. The biggest hurdle? Getting started and staying motivated until the end.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to choosing the perfect beginner sewing project — and actually seeing it through.

1. Choose a Beginner-Friendly Project

When you're just starting out, go for a project that’s simple and quick to complete. Think:

  • Tote bags

  • Elastic waistband skirts

  • Cushion cover (Psst! Check out our Cushion Cover class here)

  • Simple tops

You’ll want something that teaches you basic sewing techniques — like straight stitching, hemming, or inserting elastic — but isn’t too overwhelming.

💡 Pro Tip: Our Starter Bundle are perfect for those with no or little experience! You will learn sewing machine basics starting from how to use both the sewing and overlock machine, how to read patterns, cut fabrics correctly, make a pouch, and learn where to buy all your supplies from!

2. Pick the Right Fabric

Avoid fabrics that are stretchy, slippery, or too thick. Instead, choose:

  • Cotton: easy to work with and forgiving for mistakes

  • Linen blends: beginner-friendly and breezy

  • Canvas: great for structured projects like bags

3. Set Small Goals

It’s tempting to want to finish your whole outfit in one go — but pacing is key. Break your project into manageable steps like:

  • Day 1: Cut your fabric

  • Day 2: Thread your machine and sew the first seam

  • Day 3: Finish edges and hem

By making each step bite-sized, you’ll feel a sense of achievement at every stage — and are more likely to complete the whole thing.

4. Learn the Basics Before You Start

Before diving into a project, make sure you know:
✅ How to thread your sewing machine
✅ How to backstitch
✅ How to use a sewing pattern

Don’t worry if you don’t know all this yet — our Sewing Workshops cover these fundamental skills in a hands-on, beginner-friendly setting.

5. Choose a Design You’re Excited About

If you’re making something you actually want to wear or use, you’ll be more motivated to finish. Think about your personal style:
Do you want to sew a top you’ll wear to brunch? A tote bag for errands? A gift for someone?

6. Don't be afraid to ask for help (Seriously!)

Sewing doesn’t have to be a solo journey. Join a community of learners, ask questions, and learn from mistakes together. At Fashion Makerspace, we’ve built a safe space for all skill levels, where you can learn, mess up, and grow.

We even have custom classes that tailor to your learning pace and preferences — whether you want one-on-one guidance or to focus on a specific garment. Explore our Custom Class Packages here.

7. Finish Strong

Once you’ve completed your first project, don’t just fold it away—show it off! Post it, wear it, or gift it. That “I made this!” feeling is unmatched.

And when you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here for you. From SkillsFuture-eligible sewing courses to pattern-making workshops, Fashion Makerspace offers a range of options to help you level up your craft.

TLDR:

✅ Start small, with beginner sewing projects
✅ Use the right fabric and tools
✅ Break it into steps, and don’t rush
✅ Get support from a community
✅ Most importantly… don’t forget to celebrate your finish!
